For most of the space age debris outnumbered working satellites. That reversed recently and quickly, as large constellations added payloads faster than the debris population grew.

That is not straightforwardly good news. Those payloads are concentrated in a narrow band of low Earth orbit, they are numerous enough that conjunction management is now continuous, and they will eventually become debris themselves unless they deorbit as designed.

The series is reconstructed by running launch and decay dates forward, so it reflects what is catalogued — objects too small to track are not here, and there are far more of them.
